Lunar Energy

ID

Lunar Energy, a home battery start-up, partnered with Daylight Design to create their company branding, industrial design and app design. I worked closely with Lunar's engineering team, evolving the product from concept to production and overseeing significant internal and external design changes as the product went into production.

A Story of Day and Night

The lunar battery stores energy generated from solar panels during the day and powers the home at night. This cyclical usage pattern drew graphic parallels with lunar/tide charting.

The Logo

The duality of "day and night" inspired the double semicircle logo, representing both the sun and moon as well as the cyclical power usage cycle.

Battery Design

The logo is applied vertically on the battery unit in the form of the "lunar wave". The wave protrudes from the battery's surface, creating a dynamic shadow that shifts throughout the day.

App Design

Similarly the app displays fluctuating energy units with a background scene synced to the lighting outside.

Project Timeline

  1. Material Change

I oversaw a significant design change, switching materials from aluminum to plastic, due to supply chain constraints. A reversible plastic cover design allowed a single tool part to create the dynamic wave feature.

  1. Thermal Redesign

Higher airflow needs drove the evolution from the original stamped vent design to a high density, perforated vent.

  1. Battery User Interface Design

Exploration of the battery UI included glowing logos, battery fill bars and more. The design landed on a simple 3 dot battery indicator display.

  1. CMF Design

I detailed CMF through production specifying pad print inks and the battery material finish. The battery CMF evolved from anodized aluminum to powder coat, eventually landing on wet paint on plastic.
